SeaWorld San Antonio

The Texas SeaWorld — Iron Rattler's quarry walls, three coasters, and the biggest water-park half in the chain.

  • OpenedApril 15, 1988
  • Attractions7
  • Height requirements3
  • A full day is8–10 hours
  • Size250 acres

SeaWorld San Antonio opened in 1988 as the third SeaWorld and the one built around space: 250 acres of Texas hill country west of the city, including a water park that is genuinely half the product in summer. It is the only park on this site where the aquatic-center answer to 'what is this place' changes with the season.

The coaster core is small and serious: Iron Rattler, the 2013 Rocky Mountain hybrid that rides the walls of the park's former limestone quarry, is one of the best coasters in Texas and the reason coaster travelers make the drive from Arlington or Austin. The Great White's invert loops and Steel Eel's hyper-style hills complete a three-coaster lineup that punches above its size.

Zone names here are approximate clusters, as at every SeaWorld — the parks don't publish hard land boundaries. The quarry geography is the one undeniable structure: Iron Rattler's drops dive into the pit, and the park's layout wraps around it.

Summer is the complication: 95-plus days make the water-park half the main event and the coaster queues shorter than the slide queues. Spring and October — the fall haunt season — are the civilised windows for a ride-focused visit.

What to eat here

Our highest-priority items in SeaWorld San Antonio. Mark them on the tracker and they save to your device.

Brisket sandwich

Waterfront Bar and Grill

Sliced-brisket sandwich at the waterfront grill — Texas protein in the park's best-seated building.

Our take: The best hot lunch at the park. Eat it indoors at the heat peak and call it strategy.

Near the top of the list Savory

Funnel cake

Canyon Funnel Cake Cart

Fresh funnel cake from the quarry-rim cart, eaten at the overlook.

Our take: The view does half the work and the sugar does the rest. The park's correct dessert.

Sweet

Savory snack carts

The smoked turkey leg, walked from cart to coaster queue.

Our take: A theme-park rite with real utility: protein, portable, shareable. Split it or commit.

Things worth knowing before you go

Spring and October are the ride seasons

The coaster-focused visit belongs to March-through-May and late September through October. Summer belongs to the water park — plan accordingly or melt accordingly.

Iron Rattler against the shows

The Rattler's queue dips during the stadium presentations like every ride here. One schedule photograph saves an hour of queue.

The quarry is the photo

The rim views into the limestone pit, with the Rattler's track on the walls, are the park's signature image. Morning light is the one.

San Antonio pairs it right

The city's River Walk evenings plus a park day is the complete trip. The park is 20 minutes from downtown — stay central, not park-adjacent.

Quick Queue tiers matter less here

The three-coaster core means the mid tier usually suffices; this site's line-skip guide prices them as of July 2026.

Getting there

Parking

Large lots at the park; the walk runs five to ten minutes with trams on peak days.

At the entrance

Security at the entrance plaza. Iron Rattler's walk from the gate is ten-plus minutes — the rope-drop minutes are for its queue.

How to get here

  • By car: west of San Antonio off TX-151, about 20 minutes from downtown and the River Walk.
  • By air: San Antonio International (SAT) is 25 minutes; Austin (AUS) is 80.
  • Rideshare works but the west-side location makes the return trip at close slower than downtown's.

SeaWorld San Antonio questions, answered

What is the best ride at SeaWorld San Antonio?

Iron Rattler. The Rocky Mountain hybrid dives off real quarry walls — one of the best coaster settings in America and among the best rides in Texas. Steel Eel's airtime hills are the under-heralded second.

What are the height requirements at SeaWorld San Antonio?

Iron Rattler and Steel Eel at 48 inches; the Great White at 54. This site asserts only the figures it would stake a build on — check the park's own pages for the family tier before promising a rider.

Is the water park included?

It depends on the ticket — the water park is a major separate-admission component in summer with combined options. Check what your ticket includes before planning a ride-and-slide day.

Can you do SeaWorld San Antonio in one day?

The ride-and-show park, yes. Adding the water park honestly needs two days or a ruthless split. A coaster-focused morning plus the afternoon shows is the one-day core.

When does the Halloween haunt run in San Antonio?

Select fall nights, late September through Halloween, as a separate ticket. Dates shift annually — this site's Halloween section carries the current expectation with a confidence label.

Is SeaWorld San Antonio worth the drive from Arlington or Austin?

For Iron Rattler alone, coaster travelers say yes — it pairs naturally with Six Flags Over Texas for a Texas hybrid double (the Giant and the Rattler, four hours apart). For general families, the city and the River Walk close the argument.
