Six Flags Plaza at Magic Mountain

The plaza is the park's front door and its most photographed corner, because Full Throttle's 160-foot top hat and vertical loop lean directly over the entry road. You pass under the ride on the way in, which is either a welcome or a warning depending on your party.

Beyond Full Throttle the plaza holds the park's main guest services, lockers and the tram drop from the parking lot. Goldrusher, the 1971 mine train that started all of this, still runs from the base of the hill here — it is the park's oldest coaster and worth one lap for the history even though it is the smallest thing on the mountain.

Ride Full Thrust loops — Full Throttle — at rope drop from the plaza before the crowd migrates up the hill, then leave this area until evening.
Buy lockers here, not at individual rides: several coasters require loose articles in a paid locker and the plaza lockers are the cheapest per-hour.

The plaza's launch coaster with the world's tallest vertical loop, hanging over the front gate — the ride every arriving guest walks under.

Full Throttle is the park's front-door statement: a Premier launched coaster whose 160-foot vertical loop is visible from the freeway and which the entry road literally passes beneath. The launch hits 66 miles per hour into the loop, then a second launch reverses the train through the same loop's base backwards, and a third dribble of speed sends it over the top-hat.

Tips for Full Throttle

Ride at close, not at open — the evening queue dies while the summit crowd is still upstairs.
The backwards launch is the surprise; brace your neck against the headrest before the second launch.
This is the loudest coaster to stand under — the plaza photo spot by the loop gets the full effect.

The 1971 mine train that opened with the park — the mountain's first coaster and still its gentlest.

Goldrusher predates everything else at Magic Mountain: it opened with the park on day one in May 1971, and its lift, tunnel and dip course have introduced children to roller coasters for over fifty years. It is small, slow and completely unbothered by any of the records its neighbors chase.

Tips for Goldrusher

Zero queue almost always — the perfect confidence-builder between big rides.
The tunnel mid-course is the 'scary' part for tiny riders; prepare them and they wear it like a badge.
Ride it early in the day as a warm-up, not as a substitute for the 48-inch tier with a tall-enough kid.
