Closed, and what replaced it

These come up constantly in searches and in old guidebooks, so we keep them listed rather than quietly deleting them.

AttractionLandWhat happened
Montezooma's RevengeFiesta VillageClosed amid the Fiesta Village redevelopment and not operating as of this site's last check. The 1978 Schwarzkopf flywheel-loop shuttle — one of the last of its kind in the world — is expected to return as part of the reimagined section, but the timeline has extended repeatedly. Verify on Knott's current attraction list before planning around it; this site's closure tracker follows it.

Ghost Town

The original 1880s ghost town — real relocated buildings, working artisans, and GhostRider's wooden structure towering over Main Street.

GhostRider

48"122cm

Roller coaster · 2½ min · Line-skip

The West's signature wooden coaster — a dark 108-foot first drop out of the Ghost Town mountain into the longest woodie course in California.

GhostRider opened in 1998 as the capstone of Ghost Town's revival and ran famously rough for its first eighteen years; the 2016 rebuild by Great Coasters International replaced the track and returned the ride to its intended form. The result is the park's signature and one of the best wooden coasters on the West Coast.

Tips for GhostRider
  • Rope-drop it; the queue is the park's longest by a wide margin and grows all morning.
  • Save the second ride for the last hour — GhostRider after dark is the park's signature moment.
  • The 2016 track rides smooth; the structure still roars. Both facts are the appeal.

Calico Mine Ride

Any height

Dark ride · 4 min

The 1960 dark ride inside Ghost Town's man-made mountain — ore carts, animatronic miners, and the park's oldest signature experience.

The Calico Mine Ride opened in 1960, predating Disneyland's dark-ride golden age, and remains the anchor of Ghost Town's man-made mountain: ore-cart trains through staged mine scenes with animatronic workers, blasting effects, and a cavern finale. It was restored in 2014-15 with new effects and looks better than it has in decades.

Tips for Calico Mine Ride
  • Do it at open before its family queue builds.
  • The final cavern scene is the payoff — sit back and let the kids see it first.
  • Ride at open when the mountain's interior is coolest — the midday queue bakes on the switchbacks.

Calico River Rapids

Any height

Water ride · 6 min · Line-skip

The Ghost Town rapids — Calico's backstory, animatronic wildlife, and a wave wall that finds every rider equally.

Calico River Rapids is the 2019 rebuild of the park's classic rapids ride: a channel through the Calico mining backstory with staged wildlife, geysers, and a wave wall that has ended more dry socks in Buena Park than any ride in California. It anchors the Ghost Town edge that the mine ride and GhostRider define.

Tips for Calico River Rapids
  • Every seat eventually meets the wave — there is no strategy, only acceptance.
  • Ride it between GhostRider laps in the afternoon heat; the dry-off window is one coaster cycle.
  • Lockers for electronics — the soak does not negotiate.

Fiesta Village

The reimagined Mexican-heritage section, home to classic coasters and the long-running Montezooma's redevelopment.

Jaguar!

42"107cm

Roller coaster · 2 min

The family coaster spiraling around Fiesta Village's ziggurat — the 42-inch entry to the park's coaster ladder.

Jaguar! is Fiesta Village's family coaster, climbing inside and around the section's Mayan-ziggurat centerpiece before dropping into a spiral course around the village. The theming integration — the coaster and the ziggurat are one structure — is the most complete ride-environment blend at the park.

Tips for Jaguar!
  • The 42-inch bar makes this the park's best first 'real' coaster.
  • The queue moves fast — a reliable stop between the bigger rides with younger kids in tow.
  • The spiral finale circles the whole village — wave to the queue on the way down.

Sol Spin

Any height

Spinner · 2 min

The tall fiesta spinner — rotating arms at height over the village, the most disorienting family-tier ride at the park.

Sol Spin is Fiesta Village's modern flat ride: a tall rotating centerpiece whose arms spin riders at altitude over the reworked village. It belongs to the genre of spinners that look gentle from the queue and are not.

Tips for Sol Spin
  • Do not judge it from the ground — the arm rotation at height is the ride.
  • Motion-sensitive riders: this one sneaks up. Skip if HangTime was too much.
  • Watch one full cycle from the fence before deciding — the arm speed tells you more than the sign does.

Pony Express

Any height

Roller coaster · 1 min · Line-skip

The straddle-seat launch coaster — riders mount like horses, launch like outlaws, and bank through Fiesta Village at family speed.

Pony Express is a Zamperla straddle launch coaster: riders sit astride horse-style seats and are launched out of the station around a banked oval course through the reworked Fiesta Village. The launch supplies the thrill; the rest is scenery at pleasant speed.

Tips for Pony Express
  • The launch is immediate — lean forward and enjoy it rather than bracing.
  • Pairs with Jaguar for the Fiesta Village family hour.
  • The straddle seat is less forgiving of very tall riders than it looks.

The Boardwalk

The seaside-pier section where HangTime's beyond-vertical drop and Xcelerator's launch carry the park's modern thrill load.

HangTime

48"122cm

Roller coaster · 2 min · Line-skip

California's only infinity coaster — a 96-degree beyond-vertical drop that hangs you over the crest before dropping into five inversions.

HangTime is a Gerstlauer infinity coaster, the type known for its beyond-vertical first drops, and its 96-degree opening remains among the steepest in the country. The train crests the lift, tips past vertical, and pauses — a deliberate hold that makes the drop a genuine freefall beat — before releasing into a compact, inversion-heavy layout over the Boardwalk.

Tips for HangTime
  • Front row for the crest hold — the pause before the drop is the signature and reads best from the lead car.
  • Ride after Xcelerator in the morning Boardwalk window; their queues grow together.
  • The inversion count is high for the ride's length — motion-sensitive riders take note.

Xcelerator The Ride

48"122cm

Roller coaster · 1 min · Line-skip

The 1950s-themed launch coaster — 0 to 82 mph in 2.3 seconds into a 205-foot top hat, the park's fastest minute.

Xcelerator is the Boardwalk's hot-rod: an Intamin accelerator coaster themed to 1950s dragsters, launching to 82 miles per hour in 2.3 seconds up a 205-foot twisting top hat and down into two airtime hills. When it opened in 2002 it was among the fastest launches anywhere, and the launch still out-accelerates nearly everything on the West Coast.

Tips for Xcelerator The Ride
  • Ride first in the Boardwalk order — its queue grows fastest of the three.
  • Front row for the launch; the acceleration reads best where nothing is ahead of you.
  • The over-the-shoulder straps are minimal; glasses wearers need a strap.

Silver Bullet

Any height

Roller coaster · 2 min · Line-skip

The full-size B&M invert looping over the Boardwalk's reflection lake — the park's smoothest thrill ride.

Silver Bullet is Knott's B&M inverted coaster, wrapping the Boardwalk's lake in a layout of loop, zero-g roll, corkscrews and helixes. It is the smoothest big ride at the park — B&M's engineering reads as comfort even at full inversion count — and its queue skirts the water for the park's best ride-adjacent views.

Tips for Silver Bullet
  • The mid-afternoon slot is right — after the morning Boardwalk rush, before the evening re-rides.
  • Front row over the lake at golden hour is the park's best coaster photo op.
  • Ride between GhostRider laps: its smoothness resets the spine.

Voyage to the Iron Reef

Any height

Interactive game · 4 min

The interactive 3D dark ride under the Boardwalk — laser blasters, steampunk sea creatures, and the family crowd-pleaser.

Voyage to the Iron Reef is the Boardwalk's interactive dark ride: riders board vehicles with mounted blasters and shoot at animated sea creatures through a 3D-projection course. It is the park's best bad-weather and heat-refuge ride, and the competitive scoring makes it repeatable in a way flat dark rides are not.

Tips for Voyage to the Iron Reef
  • The midday heat hour is its natural slot — indoors and cool.
  • Aim for the gold-highlighted targets; the scoring rewards streaks.
  • Compare scores at unload; the leaderboard resets each cycle and the rematch sells itself.

Camp Snoopy

The PEANUTS-themed family section — the under-48-inch heart of the park and the reason Knott's works for mixed-age families.

Sierra Sidewinder

Any height

Roller coaster · 1½ min

The Camp Snoopy spinning family coaster — free-rotating cars through a banked mountain course, the kid-favorite.

Sierra Sidewinder is Camp Snoopy's coaster: small cars that spin freely as they run a banked figure course, combining mild speed with manageable dizziness. It is the archetypal kid coaster — enough motion to thrill a six-year-old, little enough to bore a twelve-year-old, spinning enough to keep both honest.

Tips for Sierra Sidewinder
  • The spin rate depends on load distribution — heavier sides spin more.
  • Multiple laps are the norm; the queue rarely argues.
  • Riders facing backward at dispatch spin more — load accordingly depending on who wants the show.
