Ghost Town is the heart of the park and the reason Knott's qualifies as the first theme park: the buildings are authentic structures moved to the site in the 1940s, staffed by working artisans, and organized around a genuinely atmospheric 1880s streetscape.

GhostRider, the park's signature wooden coaster, threads its structure through and around the town — the ride's roar is Ghost Town's ambient sound. The Calico Mine Ride, the 1960 dark ride that predates Disney's dark-ride golden age, still operates inside the man-made mountain at the town's edge.

For first-timers the advice is simple: give Ghost Town more time than the queue board suggests. The people-watching, the artisans, and the atmosphere are the product, not the preamble.

The West's signature wooden coaster — a dark 108-foot first drop out of the Ghost Town mountain into the longest woodie course in California.

GhostRider opened in 1998 as the capstone of Ghost Town's revival and ran famously rough for its first eighteen years; the 2016 rebuild by Great Coasters International replaced the track and returned the ride to its intended form. The result is the park's signature and one of the best wooden coasters on the West Coast.

Tips for GhostRider
  • Rope-drop it; the queue is the park's longest by a wide margin and grows all morning.
  • Save the second ride for the last hour — GhostRider after dark is the park's signature moment.
  • The 2016 track rides smooth; the structure still roars. Both facts are the appeal.

Calico Mine Ride

The 1960 dark ride inside Ghost Town's man-made mountain — ore carts, animatronic miners, and the park's oldest signature experience.

The Calico Mine Ride opened in 1960, predating Disneyland's dark-ride golden age, and remains the anchor of Ghost Town's man-made mountain: ore-cart trains through staged mine scenes with animatronic workers, blasting effects, and a cavern finale. It was restored in 2014-15 with new effects and looks better than it has in decades.

Tips for Calico Mine Ride
  • Do it at open before its family queue builds.
  • The final cavern scene is the payoff — sit back and let the kids see it first.
  • Ride at open when the mountain's interior is coolest — the midday queue bakes on the switchbacks.

Calico River Rapids

Calico River Rapids is the 2019 rebuild of the park's classic rapids ride: a channel through the Calico mining backstory with staged wildlife, geysers, and a wave wall that has ended more dry socks in Buena Park than any ride in California. It anchors the Ghost Town edge that the mine ride and GhostRider define.

Tips for Calico River Rapids
  • Every seat eventually meets the wave — there is no strategy, only acceptance.
  • Ride it between GhostRider laps in the afternoon heat; the dry-off window is one coaster cycle.
  • Lockers for electronics — the soak does not negotiate.
