Some Fright Fest haunted attractions carry separate charges, and the value depends entirely on your scare appetite. The honest bar: if you would pay $15 for a ten-minute walk-through maze, buy; if not, the free scare zones carry the evening fine. Family strategy
Families with mixed ages should invert the schedule: arrive at open, ride hard through the afternoon, and exit before the scare zones fully staff at dusk. Several parks also run daytime non-scary programming — check the park's event listing for the kid-facing hours if the party is young.

Worth it if you were going to Six Flags Great America in October anyway — the overlay is free atmosphere on a ride day, not a destination of its own.
